BMW and Mercedes are the car companies that dictate their rules on the auto market, and develop new products, and the rest follow the established trends. How do you decide which brand is the best? The Indy Auto Man dealer compared the BMW and Mercedes-Benz models and invited for a test drive of autos at their used car lot in Indianapolis to help decide on the winner.
Mercedes leads among luxury compact cars.
One of the most popular luxury cars is rightfully considered the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. It is also known as one of the cheapest Mercedes models on the market. The car is small but provides the comfort and functionality of larger luxury autos of the brand. The interior of this version is exquisite and high-class.
BMW is the winner among cool sports cars.
Both German brands offer several sports cars, but the only real roadster that gives pleasure on trips is the BMW Z4 – with two seats and a folding fabric roof. In addition to the Z4, BMW offers the 8-Series – a high-performance vehicle in several body types – a convertible, coupe, and four-door coupe.
Mercedes had a similar maneuverable SLC roadster but discontinued it in 2020. Fortunately, there are still many decent options in the used car marker.
Mercedes is the best among large luxury vehicles.
The Mercedes S-Class is the gold standard when it comes to full-size flagship luxury cars:
- heating, cooling, and massage functions on the front seats;
- a well-thought-out interior aromatization system;
- an intuitive infotainment system.
The S-Class confidently glides along the road, accelerating smoothly and promisingly thanks to powerful engines.
As for BMW, the automaker carried out a significant redesign of the 7-Series for the 2023 model. The model offers dazzling trim, top-notch technologies, and a panoramic entertainment system for rear passenger. However, even these significant improvements do not win the championship from the S-Class.
BMW leads among subcompact SUVs.
The top five subcompact SUVs include four models: BMW X1, BMW X2, Mercedes GLB, and Mercedes GLA. However, the leader of this segment is the redesigned X1. Many standard features, attractive handling, and a high-class interior are the advantages of the BMW X1.
Unfortunately, the X2 lacks cargo space compared to the X1. Its figures are the same as the GLA – 50.1 cubic feet. The GLB offers optional third-row seats – a rare feature in the subcompact SUV segment.
Mercedes is the leader among luxury mid-size SUVs.
The Mercedes GLE is the best in its class and this segment. It has an elegant spacious interior and powerful engines (4, 6, and 8 cylinders). The model is guaranteed to cope with road imperfection thanks to the adaptive suspension.
BMW is represented in this segment by the X5 and X6 SUVs. The X5 offers a wide range of powerful engines, great driving capabilities, balanced handling, and a long list of basic equipment. The X6 lacks cargo space. It is also a bit cramped for passengers in the back. The model has a rough ride and a high starting price.
BMW wins in the electric car segment.
Both German automakers offer electric cars but BMW has achieved great success. The model range includes i4, i7, and 7 Series electric cars based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe.
The i4 is a fastback sports sedan. That model has a range of up to 301 miles. The i7 is BMW’s new flagship EV sedan, with 536 horsepower and a range of 318 miles. These electric cars have a lot in common with their gasoline counterparts.
And the iX is the first dedicated EV model. This electric SUV has a solid interior. All passengers and equipment fit inside perfectly and comfortably. The BMW iX has improved handling, is more balanced on the road, and accelerates faster than its competitors.
BMW is the best in performance.
BMW has established itself as a premium brand with high-performance cars. From compact 3-Series to full-size 7-Series and 8-Series sedans, the cars demonstrate the highest performance indicators. This also applies to the electric i4, i7, and ix models.
Mercedes offers the best interior solutions.
All Mercedes cars, regardless of the model and configuration, can boast a luxury interior of top comfort. The interior trim and fit of materials in almost all models are first-class. And some configurations are recognized as the best in the car industry.
Of course, BMW also has something to offer. For example, X1, X3, and i7 have high build quality. Good trim and fit are inherent in many BMW modifications. But this is, of course, not the same highest level as Mercedes cars.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz manufacturers offer excellent and varied cars.
Mercedes is the best choice for drivers prioritizing interior quality, comfort, and style. Those opting for driving pleasure, reliability, and safety should consider BMW cars.
